Indian Rupee Symbol

The new symbol for the Indian Rupee, "₹," was introduced by the Indian government on July 15, 2010. In terms of its symbol, the main goal is to give Indian currency an international identity. According to some, it originated from the combination of the Latin capital "R" and the Devanagari letter "Ra." The symbol's two horizontal lines represent the national flag and the mathematical equal sign.

History of Indian Rupee Symbol

Before 2010

In international contexts, the Indian Rupee was previously represented by the abbreviation "Rs" or "INR" before the symbol. Because it lacked a unique symbol, it was frequently confused with other currencies, such as the Nepalese Rupee (NPR) or the Pakistani Rupee (PKR).

Design Contest

The Indian government held a public contest in 2009 to create a distinctive symbol for the Indian Rupee. The goal of this project was to give the currency a unique identity similar to that of the US dollar ($), euro (€), or pound (£).

Choosing and Accepting

Udaya Kumar Dharmalingam, a designer from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai, won the competition. His design was formally adopted on July 15, 2010, combining the Latin capital letter 'R' without the vertical bar with the Devanagari letter 'र' (ra).

Importance of Indian Rupee Symbol

  • Cultural Representation: The symbol represents the meeting point of Indian tradition and modernity by fusing the Devanagari "र" with the Latin "R."

  • Economic Identity: By introducing the symbol, India has become a superpower in the world economy, giving its currency a distinctive identity.

  • Easy Recognisability: The Indian Rupee symbol, like the dollar or euro symbols, improves recognition and usability in global marketplaces and online transactions.
